Will 2010 be another 2009?

Happy new year! I know it is kinda of late saying that but this is the first post since 2009. Anyways, welcome to a new decade. Last year, there were many events that made 2009 either memorable to you or a year that you just want to believe never happened. In politics, we had Barack Obama, our first African-American president, take office, the healthcare debate, the undiebomber from Nigeria, and many of you know that we are still in a recession. As many of us Californians know, our state is in debt and even after the end of 2009, we are still billions of dollars in debt.

CD Failure? Here's a few tips if they don't work.

If your CD/DVD drive is having trouble recognizing a disc:

If you know the disc isn't blank, check whether the data surface is damaged. There will be obvious scratches if the disc is too damaged to read; if there's any doubt, then the surface is probably not damaged enough to be unreadable. An excessively scratched disc will not be read by any device. Polishing kits are available which may restore your disc's readability. However, UITS has not tested any of them, and therefore cannot provide any advice on their effectiveness.

Winter Break!

Well, its that time of year again : Winter break! Now go sleep, eat, and repeat untill you become a living zombie. But remember to keep be safe and dont do any "illegal stuff".
As for me, I will not be relaxing during these two weeks. I will be having rehersals for the PCC Tournament of Roses Band. That's right, I will be marching in the Rose Parade next year, so I will be busy busy busy! What are some of the things you guys will be doing during Winter break? Share!

Linux, is it Free?

Many new Linux users are confused by the terms bantered around “Free”, Freely Available, Commercial Distributions and Shareware.
The confusion comes primarily from the description and terms “Freely Available” and “Free” and their distinctions.

File Transfer Protocol: FTP

In a typical FTP session, the user is sitting in front of one host (the local host) and wants to transfer files to or from a remote host. In order for the user to access the remote account, the user must provide a user identification and a password. After providing this authorization information, the user can transfer files from the local file system to the remote file system and vice versa. The user interacts with FTP through an FTP user agent.
